How Sustainable Was SPC Impact? View the SPC Impact 2024 Event Sustainability Report

The Sustainable Packaging Coalition team is excited to share our first SPC Impact 2024 Event Sustainability and Carbon Emissions Report. The report communicates both the sustainability initiatives and the carbon impact of the flagship event, which convenes key stakeholders across the packaging value chain.

At SPC Impact 2024, more than 800 attendees from across the world gathered to move sustainable packaging forward, focusing on a theme of achieving Less Carbon with Better Packaging.

While any event with attendees hailing from across continents comes with a carbon emissions impact, we make a concerted effort to maximize our SPC events’ sustainability. Our key event sustainability initiatives include:

  • Serving only vegetarian or vegan meals to reduce carbon
  • Eliminating single-use cups at events and encouraging attendees to bring and use reusable water bottles
  • Sourcing event signage from recycled materials, and recycling those materials at the event’s end
  • Encouraging attendees to practice sustainable transportation during the event by carpooling, taking public transportation, or walking
  • Diverting food waste to the hotel’s venue partner

Advancing sustainability depends on accurate assessments—that’s why we’re proud to share our SPC Impact 2024 Event Sustainability and Carbon Emissions Report. In the report, you’ll find that the carbon impact of SPC Impact 2024 was 735.92 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The report also breaks down carbon impact by category, average impact per attendee, waste breakdown, and exhibitor impact.

To offset the carbon impact of SPC Impact 2024, SPC is purchasing credits from the National Indian Carbon Coalition. The credits will fund the Mississippi Band of Choctaw’s project to increase carbon sequestration and forest health for over two-thirds of their tribal lands.

As we embark on this journey of equipping ourselves with the data needed to better understand, communicate, and improve our event-related impact, we’ll practice transparency about both our progress and our limitations. We’ll continue developing and streamlining our carbon impact reporting with each event we host.
