Education and Outreach

As part of the SPC's education and outreach, it holds several in-person and online meetings and educational events a year. The SPC believes it will require collaboration throughout the supply chain to affect the change needed to realize sustainable packaging. As a result, the SPC continually looks for opportunities to advance its mission through participation in and hosting of conferences and meetings.

SPC Open Forum - A Packaging Industry Collaboration to Improve MRF Efficiencies - October 2015

Tuesday, October 13, 2015

11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

Presenter: Derric Brown, Director, Sustainability, Evergreen Packaging
Five national trade associations recently co-funded a MRF Material Flow Study to find ways to optimize the recycling of their packaging after it goes into the bin or cart. The study specifically evaluated where packages end up in a sorting facility, why packages flow in certain ways and what potential changes to the sorting processes could improve recovery. It uniquely looks at how numerous materials flow through several different types of materials recovery facilities (MRFs) with the goal of better understanding how to get more recyclables actually recycled. Derric's presentation will provide an overview of the study and its findings, including evidence that cartons should not be flattened or crushed before being placed in a recycling container. The five national trade associations who funded the study are Carton Council of North America, American Chemistry Council, Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers, Foodservice Packaging Institute, and the National Association for PET Container Resources.
