Education and Outreach

As part of the SPC's education and outreach, it holds several in-person and online meetings and educational events a year. The SPC believes it will require collaboration throughout the supply chain to affect the change needed to realize sustainable packaging. As a result, the SPC continually looks for opportunities to advance its mission through participation in and hosting of conferences and meetings.

SPC Fall Members Meeting 2012 Session Descriptions

Greenstar Recycling Center

Start your meeting off with an early Monday morning tour. We have several tours planned to cater to a variety of member interests.

Greenstar Recycling is the largest municipal and commercial single stream processor in the Pittsburgh area. The company began in 1991 as a metals only processor, but has diversified since that time to a full service materials recovery facility (MRF).

AgRecycle Industrial Composting Facility

AgRecycle Composting is the largest industrial composter in Pennsylvania. AgRecycle accepts compostable packaging from a variety of businesses and facilities, including the Pittsburgh Convention Center and PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Come find out how the compostable packaging supply chain works together, from packaging design through use to end-of-life.

* Please note that space is limited on both of these tours, and spots are filled on a first come first served basis.

Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Game

Start off this year's meeting with a fun networking opportunity with other SPC members. Steve Mahler of Caraustar will generously be leading a trip to the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game on Sunday, September 9. The first pitch will be thrown at 1:00 pm, and for only $25 you will receive a ticket on the 3rd base line with a view of the Pittsburgh skyline and a Roberto Clementi t-shirt. Don't miss this great opportunity to network with other leaders in the sustainable packaging field; all while enjoying a hot dog and cold beer.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Steve Mahler by email before the cutoff date of August 7.

Meeting Information

We know that our members use what they learn about packaging sustainability from their participation in the SPC and collaboration with other member companies to push for improved sustainability up and down their supply chains and spread the sustainability message within their companies. This year, we celebrate eight years of groundbreaking collective work as the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, and we are looking to our members to shape the future of the organization. As we continue to work together to advance sustainable packaging, we look forward to a robust discussion on the future of the SPC as we focus on strategic planning for the next five years.

Woven throughout the sessions, our meeting’s theme will be “Success Through Supply Chain Collaboration.” Look for this theme in sessions that showcase SPC members working together and along their supply chains, as well as the SPC partnering with other organizations. This theme includes our SPC Member-Led Working Groups, who will be providing updates on each group’s progress. The feedback we received from you in the online member survey and at the Spring Meeting made it clear that you want more sessions featuring collaboration, more interactive sessions, and for the SPC to move from providing information to enabling action at your company. We believe that this year's agenda will be a great starting point for doing just that.

Please note that the Fall Meeting is dedicated to getting our members involved in projects, informing them of the business of the SPC, and shaping the future of the organization, and therefore does not typically include external speakers.
